Compliance Roles and Responsibilities

Faculty and staff:

  • Understand and follow the principles articulated in the Institutional Standards of Conduct.
  • Conduct Yale-related activities in accordance with applicable requirements.
  • Report questions, concerns, adverse events, or incidents of non-compliance.

Academic and administrative leadership:

  • Champion university values, ethical culture, and individual accountability.

Subject matter-specific compliance functions:

  • Support faculty and staff in meeting applicable requirements
  • Serve as subject matter experts for applicable regulatory area(s), which includes remaining current with changes in relevant laws and regulations.
  • Manage the compliance program for applicable regulatory area(s), which generally includes setting policy standards, communicating requirements, advising faculty and staff, monitoring compliance, addressing responsive matters (such as questions, concerns, adverse events, or incidents of non-compliance), and reporting to leadership.

Compliance Program Manager:

  • Design and execute Yale’s Institutional Compliance Program.
  • Promote a culture of ethics and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Coordinate with relevant stakeholders, including subject matter specific compliance functions, to standardize, monitor, evaluate, and right-size compliance activities at Yale.
  • Partner with the Office of Enterprise Risk Management and University Auditing & Quality Assurance to ensure a coordinated and consistent approach to managing Yale’s control and assurance activities.
  • Report periodically to Yale’s officers and trustees (primarily through the Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee and Audit Committee of the Yale Corporation, respectively) regarding the state of compliance at Yale.
  • Network with other university compliance officers to stay apprised of emerging compliance issues and share best practices.

Audit, Risk and Compliance Committee:

  • Oversee and support the Institutional Compliance Program.
  • Provide strategic insight and direction regarding specific compliance topics or challenges.
  • Ensure that appropriate individual(s) or offices(s) are accountable for executing their responsibilities relating to compliance. 

Audit Committee of the Yale Corporation:

  • Reviews the state of compliance at Yale, as well as compliance planning efforts and results
